HOT on the heels of Mbo Mahocs landing a spot on eTV’s Scandal, another Zimbabwean is on the cusp of a small screen breakthrough after Munya Chidzonga announced this week that he was joining the cast of Generations: The Legacy.
Nicknamed the Diamond Boy, Chidzonga was Zimbabwe’s representative in the Big Brother House, where he came second and emerged as perhaps Zimbabwe’s most loved reality TV star.
In the Big Brother house, Chidzonga broke records when he escaped elimination for a record nine times, in the process winning the hearts of more than 10 million Africans who voted for him to ensure his survival. Since his famous stint on the reality show, Chidzonga has been making strides in his acting career over the past years.
Having starred in popular local production, Lobola, Chidzonga already has had a taste of the South African small screen as he appeared on Rhythm City and Mzansi Love on eTV.
Now Chidzonga is set to make the biggest move of his career, appearing on a show that is vying for the title of the most viewed television program across all genres in South Africa.
Even the World Cup could not knock those two off their perch over the last few weeks, with the two shows reaching nine million viewers in the month of June while the world’s premier soccer showpiece pulled over 6 million viewers on SABC and under a million on pay TV service, DStv.
Chidzonga casually announced the potentially blockbuster role on his Facebook page last week.
“Another day in the office. 4am call time . . . New role on Generations: The Legacy loading . . . Catch Detective Chakunda next month. Dates to be advised . . . ,” he posted on his Facebook page.
On the set of Generations, Munya will join compatriot Chi Mhende who has been captivating audiences with her spellbinding performances since the return of the soapie in a new form a few years ago.
