New Year . . . new wardrobe

2016 has come and gone and this is when people make resolutions. Some plan to start eating healthily, some to stop drinking and going out less and some to slay in terms of fashion. I’m joining those who intend to slay in 2017 but this can be difficult if you are still holding on to the stuff you were wearing last year.

New Year, new trends, new clothes, right? So what are we looking forward to this year and what fashion trends are leaving in 2016?

WHAT’S IN?

Stripes
The equivalent to what a white t-shirt used to be back in the day. We’ve seen the trend now for two to three seasons and it will continue to carry forward. Stripes do not seem to be going away anytime soon, from casual to corporate wear. Do get yourself a nice stripe blazer or pants.

Sneakers

Sneakers will continue to be extremely popular in the upcoming year. Because of their versatility, you can never have too many. Glitter, leopard, and satin updates to sneakers effortlessly dress up an outfit and give you a reason to buy multiple pairs.

Mule shoe

One shoe trend we see really taking over in 2017 is the mule. Flat mules, low block-heel mules, heeled mules, sneaker mules, espadrille mules — mules in all fabrications and colours including velvet, satin, canvas, and embroidery. They were big for 2016 and they will be even bigger for 2017 (mostly in fashion capitals).

Wearing leggings under a dress

Most people from African countries will agree that this “trend” is not new to them as grannies, aunties and mothers pull this off daily. We love fashion and the weirder it is the more popular it is. Wear your legging under your dress or skirt, contrasting colours will make it more interesting.

Supersize your blazer

Oversized blazers are very much in. You don’t even have to wear it but hang it on your shoulders. Super-sized blazers are worn to look stylish, not because we are cold, it’s just for swag.

WHAT’S OUT?

Corsets

Corsets had such a huge moment this year, but we are not sure if designers will continue this into 2017 after the trend was covered in such a major way in the press.

Skinny jeans

A huge change is coming in the denim world. Skinny jeans with stretch have reigned supreme for a long time but we anticipate a shift toward contrast denim styles in vintage silhouettes. Baggy pants are coming back.

Clean classic sneakers (Tommies)

We’re starting to see that clean classic sneakers are not as exciting anymore. It’s now about sneakers that are embellished or have something like emojis or logos on them.

Heels four to five inches or higher

High heels have been a trend that we have seen rapidly decrease. Women nowadays are way more focused on comfort and practicality and value investing in a shoe that is both stylish and comfortable enough to walk or commute in which is why there has been such an increase in demand for sneakers and low block-heels.

2017 will be a great year, in terms of fashion especially . . . Let’s slay!
