SOUTH AFRICA-BASED businessman Ackim Ngwenya has organised an Independence Cup football tournament which will be played at Manora growth point, Bulilima District in Plumtree on Wednesday.

Eight teams will take part in the tournament which has been organised as a way of celebrating the 38th birthday of Zimbabwe and Ngwenya said the tournament was meant to unite the people of Fairview, while improving the economic nature of the area.

“My aim is to combine and unite with our neighbours through sport, help in the development of our community while promoting businesses within the area through sport and above all to urge the youths to stay away from drugs and other ill practices,’’ said Ngwenya.

Prizes have been set aside for the tournament as the winning team will walk away with $350 and a floating trophy while losing finalists will receive $130 plus silver medals, a golden boot trophy for the tournament’s top goal scorer has been made available and the most disciplined team will be rewarded with medals.

Speaking on the talent which is available in Fairview, Ngwenya said, “a lot of talent has gone unnoticed in Fairview due to lack of exposure hence it is also my wish that the tournament will help the young football players showcase their talent and be spotted since a huge turnout of football lovers including coaches from lower divisions is expected.”

Teams set to compete are Fairview, Manora, Zihwabeni, Paul Rest, Solusi, Derude, Mbonqane, Mbonane and independence celebrations will continue till late in Fairview where football players, coaches, supporters and villagers will be given meat and refreshments.
