NORTHLEA High School have something to boast about for several years to come as one of their students, Gareth Jenkins (17) got selected to undergo trials in Germany for handball in August.

The 17-year-old was chosen alongside three other students from Harare; Tonderai Chiwambutsa, Norma Suche and Melissa Makuwe. They are expected to leave the country on 10 August. They will try their luck at four clubs.

According to Jenkins, transport and accommodation was covered by Geebee Education Fund in Germany.

Jenkins said he was glad to represent his school and Bulawayo.

“I’m so happy for being chosen to travel to Germany. At first it was like a dream but I’ve realised that it’s reality as days are drawing closer and closer for me to travel,” said Jenkins.

Jenkins started playing handball in Form 2 in 2014 and for the past two years he has received medals like the 2015 most valuable player in Bulawayo Under-17 handball, Northlea’s best sportsperson in 2015 and a certificate in the Confederation of School Sport Associations of Southern Africa (Cossasa) games.

The youngster also gave credit to his coaches, friends and family for supporting him through thick and thin.

“I wound like to thank my coaches Nkosikhona Soganile and Nkosi Ncube for pushing me harder to the limits that I’ve never been to. I also like to thank my mother and friends for supporting me all the way with all I needed,” said Jenkins.
