PRINCE Edward High School (PE) clinched the National Association of Secondary Heads (Nash) boys Under-17 soccer competition after beating Chinhoyi High 2-0 in the final played at Barbourfields Stadium B arena yesterday.

Despite missing an early penalty in the first- half Prince Edward came back a rejuvenated side in the second half to grab two brilliant goals on their way to being crowned the kings of schools football.

The game started at a fast pace with action swinging from one end to the other but never producing anything meaningful upfront. Two clinically taken goals in the second half was all PE needed to lift the trophy with the first being a header that Hamilton Gomba connected from a corner kick and the second was a thunderous volley taken by Tadiwanashe Masukuta from just outside the box which remained the talk of the day long after the game had ended.

At the end of the day PE head coach Norman Edward Taruvinga who is also the teacher in charge of sports at the Harare school  was happy at how his boys applied themselves on the field especially after the half-time pep talk during which he emphasised the need to up the tempo while playing their own game.

“I am very happy for the victory, it’s good for the boys, and it’s good for my school and it’s for all those that have been involved with football at PE. The same goes to the former coaches Jacob Chavurama now at Platinum FC, Tonderai Ndiraya now at Dynamos, Bongani Mafu, it’s fantastic,” he said.

On their way to the showdown, PE brushed aside Rusunguko 2-0 in the semi-finals while Chinhoyi had to thank their goalie for saving a number of penalties during the shoot-out stage after a stalemate that ended 1-1 against St Joseph.

Rusunguko finished third after edging St Joseph 1-0 by virtue of conceding the least number of goals in the semi-finals.

For finishing first, PE received gold medals plus the floating trophy, Chinhoyi took home the silver with the bronze medal going to Rusununguko.

A number of residents from the surrounding areas braved the chilly weather to watch the boys in action.
