FINANCIAL woes dogging Zimbabwe Women Football have prevented them from meeting to decide on the contentious issue of relegation in the Super League.
ZWF chairperson, Miriam Sibanda said her board hoped to take advantage of the aborted Zifa annual general meeting that had been scheduled for this weekend to meet and deliberate on the issue.
However, she said ZWF would now have to first look for funds to transport and accommodate their members ahead of the meeting at a later date that will thrash out the relegation issue.
“We do not have funds to bring in the board members to Harare and we had been hoping to take advantage of the Zifa AGM but now that it has been postponed we have to seek money first and then hold the indaba. However we have to do it soon for everyone to know where they stand,” said Sibanda, adding that the board would not make the final decision independently and that they would consult the clubs and regional executives on the best move to make.
Teams that won the Division One regional leagues would also be waiting to hear whether they would be playing in the Super League or their efforts were in vain.
Sibanda said they would also be doing some introspection to ensure there were minimum standards that clubs have to meet in order for them to be part of the Super League.
“We will also be seized with the issue of how big the league is going to be. We want a manageable number of clubs and this has to be decided by the board. The promotion and relegation of teams is also likely to have an impact on how many teams we have.
“The decision might take longer as we want to employ a holistic approach that will ensure we do not have recurring problems,” she said.
Despite the resumption of the league this year after the election of the new board led by Sibanda, some teams have failed to fulfil away fixtures due to financial constraints in the unbranded league.
