abstinence

Pastor Kilton Moyo

THUS says the Lord: “Stand in the ways (crossroads) and see, and ask for the old paths, where the good way is, and walk in it; then you will find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘we will not walk in it’.’’ Jeremiah 6:16.

Whenever people are in a crisis, there is always a way out. The challenge is that the way out is always somewhat disregarded and thought to be old-fashioned. It is always the least to be considered and is always spoken about by people who are not considered serious like a mere pastor like me. In my language we have a saying going something like this, “Izwi lomyanga lizwelwa muva.” This means that even when the poor have a point they are the least to be heard. But, beloved, considering the situation we are facing in Africa as concerning our sexuality, Africa is better off listening to some of us who will speak on behalf of God who created Heavens and the earth and all that is in them, the all-knowing God who has every good purpose about humanity and our sexuality.

There is a greater need today to re-think our sexual conduct and attitude as a people than before. The evidence is right there in your eyes and all of us deep in ourselves reckon something is gone wrong. In my scripture reference, the Prophet Jeremiah reminds Israel of the good old paths wherein the good way is always hidden and forgotten. We are at that crossroads today as humanity where we are so sexually confused we cannot even tell who is female or male. We cannot tell who is a child or adult.

We cannot control our sexual appetites. We have lost all the culture and dignity in handling our sexual drive and we have gotten worse than all other creation. Do you really think that our obsession with sex in this generation is normal? I do not think so. Sexual immorality drives us away from God no matter what you think about it. The devil likes this. We are a generation that has heard so much about God but we are still so enslaved by our flesh and carnality to the point that we have done everything we can to justify our sexual weaknesses. We have even rubbished Grace by claiming we can live anyhow, after all ‘‘His grace is sufficient unto us’’. May God have mercy on this generation? Beloved, our attitude towards sex is corrupt and ungodly. We need to sober up.

There is a good way the Lord prepared for us to walk in sexually too. This is the way I want to talk about. It is called ABSTINENCE. I know that the world has so lied to our young people and said you cannot abstain. They have said it’s impossible and its stupidity. They have said so much negative things about it so much that all of us think God was wrong about abstinence. There lies the whole deception. The good, healthy way God created has been rubbished. Can’t you open your eyes and see the results? Let me show you something about abstinence.

It is the only contraceptive method that is 100% effective. It is risk free and is cost free.

It is the only contraceptive method that is available to all humanity, poor, rich, young and old and it’s inbuilt.

It is the only method that protects you holistically. It protects you from physical infection. When you abstain you cannot be infected by any form of STIs. It protects you from spiritual infection. Now listen carefully here. All our contraceptive methods that we trust so much can only protect you from physical infections and not from spiritual infection. They do not take away the immorality of your actions. You are protected but you are spiritually vulnerable. You are sinning and sinning against yourself. This is what 1 Corinthians 6:18 have been trying to teach you all these centuries. “Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his/her own body. . . ” With or without protection you are sinning against your body. This should be our defensive line. You have a healthy body but a dead spiritual life. You are separated from God. This is what a lot of us miss or rather do not care about. Sex is in the body and not outside it. Even if you have a condom you are still in the body and the action is what is spiritually condemned. Whether you have protection or not, as long as you are having sex with anyone you are not married to, you are vulnerable, you are in sin and it is wrong and is destroying you. Abstinence protects you from this kind of vulnerability. You see, abstinence is holistic.

It is both a hygienic tool and a moral tool. It serves a complete purpose. Other methods are only hygienic and give you a false sense of security. I am not saying do not protect yourself whenever you want to indulge. I am saying you must understand the spirituality of your actions. That is what is more important. Beloved, there is a judgment day ahead at the end of every human life. Whether you have been lied to or not, you will stand alone.

Abstinence to me is what we should be teaching our younger generation and not condoms and pills. Why do we deny this young generation accurate information about what God has given them for their protection? I desire to see the Church come out in full force to promote abstinence before marriage. That is what Africa needs. I desire seeing governments put money in the promotion of abstinence. It is cheaper compared to the rest. Teach them young and they will be a pure generation. My challenge is the inability of the Church in Africa to talk abstinence. People in the church are like everyone else and they also believe it is hard to abstain. This is sad. “For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality, that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor.” 1 Thessalonians 4: 3-4.

There has to be a difference between the children of God and the children of the world. Is there anyone out there who can stand up for the will of God? Yes, I am here.

Listen, it does not matter what you have done up to now, you can transform if you want to. It’s all up to you. Seek the truth and it shall set you free indeed. Otherwise Africa must be saved and Abstinence is the way to go. Abstain from sexual intercourse before marriage. Abstain from drugs. Abstain from all evil and it shall be well with you.
