VAINONA High School from Harare were crowned the 2014 champions of National Girls Rugby tournament after edging Girls High School from the same city 5-0 in a closely contested final decided in sudden death at Hartsfield Rugby Ground in Bulawayo yesterday.
Winners walked away with a floating trophy and a rugby ball while the runners up got a smaller trophy and a rugby ball while third placed Msiteli received a shield.

Zimbabwe women’s rugby national team coach Abigail Kawonza lauded the level of talent exhibited by youngsters during the games.
“I am very impressed with the level of the games played today and it shows that the future of the women’s rugby is very bright and some of the girls will be selected for the national team,” said Kawonza.

Tournament co-ordinator George Mukorera said the girls from Bulawayo lacked skill to win the tournament.
“The Bulawayo schools lacked the right skills to win the tournament but I was impressed with the talent that they showcased during the games,” said Mukorera.

Bulawayo schools had a bad outing as they were all thrashed by Harare schools who dominated throughout the games.
However, Amhlophe High School were crowned the most improved team while Lovelight Fusire of Msiteli and Gugulethu Dube of Amhlophe High School were the only Bulawayo girls named as players of the tournament out of the six who were chosen.

The tournament attracted two schools from Harare namely Vainona and Girls High and three from Bulawayo, Amhlophe, Msiteli and Sobukhazi.
