HIGHLANDERS legend Lawrence “Lofty” Phiri has urged the club’s members to be vigilant as they vote for three members of the executive at the same time guided by their love for the club.

Bosso are scheduled to hold elections to choose the chairman, secretary and committee member on 4 February as per the club’s constitution.

Phiri had earlier indicated he would be in the running for the post of secretary but has decided against taking part in the elections saying his time away from Zimbabwe meant he would not be able to get a good grasp of issues at Highlanders.

“I believe that, after an absence of over 24 years, it was a little too ambitious to believe that I will be significantly effective within such a short period. I would like to assure all of those who had encouraged me to come on board to assist in the development of the club that I will continue to be involved in its strategic recovery back to its glory days,” he said.

Phiri, however, urged members not to lose sight of the future of the club saying the current period is a trying time for the club that needs selfless, honest, committed, focused and hard working individuals to be at the helm of Bosso.

“Some people are struggling in their own careers and are now looking to Bosso to elevate them and be relevant. Such people are not necessarily looking to assist the club but want positions for selfish ends. Some have not given a hand to the club in anyway besides religiously paying subscriptions and then they feel they should be given a position of responsibility when their true commitment has not been tested.”

He said unity among committee members and the club in general is critical if the club is to rise again from the slumber that it is in adding the motives of service to Highlanders must not be guided by any other ulterior motives except exceptional contributions towards the development of the club.
