TWELVE people have died, while 105 have been injured in separate road traffic accidents recorded countrywide since the beginning of the Easter holidays.

The figure is double last year’s six recorded during the same time.

In a statement, police national spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said there has been a significant increase in the number of road traffic accidents compared to last year.

Police said the total number of accidents has shot up to 182 this year compared to 106 at the same time last year.

“Six fatalities were recorded in 2017, and this year accident fatalities have risen by 100 percent. The total number of road traffic accidents that occurred this year during the Easter Holidays currently stands at 182. The total number of people killed in 2018 stands at 12 and the total number of people injured is 105. These statistics show a sharp increase on the number of road traffic accidents” she said.

Snr Asst Comm Charamba said there was a decrease in the number of impounded vehicles, compared to 2017, where 61 vehicles were impounded countrywide.

“ZRP is still in the process of ascertaining the factors that might have caused such a huge increase in the number of road traffic accidents during the Easter Holidays,” said Snr Asst Comm Charamba.
