WHEN brothers Tonderai, Willard and Tinashe Shoko started their Keep the city clean campaign exactly 122 days ago, little did they know that their movement would attract the attention of local celebrities and the general public, who happen to share the same feelings about littering.
The clean-up campaign has also rubbed off on other African kinsmen, with the brothers calling on Zimbabweans to be responsible enough to keep the city clean.
About a fortnight ago, Zimbabwean Afropop sensation, Ammara Brown joined the movement, posting a picture of herself spotting a white Tee with the inscription Day 116, meaning that the movement had been in existence for that number of days.
Perhaps, after naming Bulawayo her favourite city, she felt obliged to at least show some appreciation by contributing to a worthy campaign.
The picture was captioned: “It does not take much to make a difference, Let’s Keep Bulawayo Clean!”
“It’s not really a campaign; we are just being responsible and trying to get people to emulate what we are doing. Bulawayo was once the cleanest city in the region and we want to restore that status. We believe we can get back to that status through a collaborative effort as a city. We are not only looking at Bulawayo but ultimately the country and continent,” said the brothers in an initial interview.
They did mention that aboard the campaign were people from as far as America, England, Kenya and South Africa sharing pictures on social media of themselves throwing trash in dustbins.
“Various friends and celebrities have joined. It takes a small step to effect a big and positive change. What we are saying is if people see what we are doing then they will emulate this noble cause,” they said.
