A KWEKWE businessman, Mr Bernard Chokurarama, has donated material worth $1 000 for the refurbishment of the Kwekwe District Hospital kitchen, responding to First Lady Amai Auxillia Mnangagwa’s call to the business community to support health institutions.

Amai Mnangagwa, while addressing people who had gathered for a cancer awareness campaign at the institution last Wednesday, called on local corporates to step forward and support Government institutions.

She went on to single out the hospital’s kitchen area which she said had outlived its lifespan and needed an urgent face uplift.

“The kitchen is now old and needs refurbishment just like the driveway and other places at this institution. Patients can recover quickly if the place is conducive and clean, so I call upon the corporate world to come forward and do something about the situation. I have played my part by donating food stuffs but I can’t do it all by myself, let us assist each other,” said Amai Mnangagwa.

In response Mr Chokururama donated paint, ceiling boards, paint brushes and tiles among other material valued at more than $1 000 to refurbish the kitchen.

“She is our mother and I don’t see any reason why we should not respond to her call. She played her part and gave the institution food items as well as fruit trees, now I say the food should be cooked in a clean environment hence the donation,” he said.

Meanwhile, Amai Mnangagwa urged the nation to put its weight behind President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s efforts to turn around the economy.

“As you can see, President Mnangagwa is working hard in turning around the economy, but he cannot achieve it all by himself. He needs everyone’s support and I am playing my part by partaking in the cancer awareness programme,” she said.

She urged hospital staff to be innovative and come up with nutritious gardens to augment what the Government and well-wishers provided.

Amai Mnangagwa added that there was urgent need for the Government to consider scrapping cancer treatment fee which is currently pegged at $400 per screening session, saying the disease was claiming a lot of lives in the country.
