POLICE in Lalapanzi in Midlands have arrested four men in connection to five cases of stock theft that happened in Wadzani, Lalapanzi, Chiwundura and Mvuma areas.

Midlands police spokesman Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said one of the suspects, Crisswel Maponga committed the crime while out on bail for another case.

“Criswell Maponga a male adult aged 42 of Tafara Village under Chief Chiwundura would steal heifers and cows from grazing lands. He would keep them at a farm in Worcestershire, Gweru. Later he would exchange them with farmers for oxen,” said Insp Mahoko.

He said police early this year received information that Maponga was in possession of 14 stolen beasts. Insp Mahoko said police reacted and arrested Maponga.

“He was taken to court where he was remanded out of custody on conditions. He breached the bail conditions and a warrant of arrest was issued.”

He said on Sunday last week, the police received a tip-off that Maponga was seen at his homestead.

“When he was arrested, he disclosed that he was working with three others, Phanuel Sisitiga (31), Tinei Moyo (38) and Walter Muzika (40) all from Chiwundura. They were also later arrested.”

He called upon communities to be vigilant and to ensure that they also clear livestock transactions with local police stations.
