CCC district organiser wanted for inciting political violence

CITIZENS For Coalition Change district organiser for Pumula district in Bulawayo, Desire Makhwelo is reportedly wanted for questioning on allegations of inciting political violence.

Makhwelo who was an active member of the then Morgan Tsvangirai led Movement for Democratic Change was reportedly recently elected into the newly formed CCC.

He was previously a key figure in the January 2019 demonstrations where together with opposition activists like Josphat Ngulube they led strikes against the government which resulted in the looting and destruction of a number of properties in the city.

According to sources it has since been alleged tha Makhwelo was continuing in his political activities where he used his position to call for people to demonstrate against the government.

In the latest developments it is reported that Makhwelo was wanted to answer questions regarding his political activities with reports that his family has also gone into hiding after police were putting pressure on them to reveal his whereabouts.

“Makhwelo was actively involved in inciting for people in Pumula to partake in political violence against the government. Our sources revealed that this had been going on for sometime where they would constantly call for illegal meetings calling for this,” said a police source.

Makhwelo’s Neighbours revealed that his family had since gone into hiding, which included his wife, Regina Sibanda, his chdren, Ngqabutho Sibanda and Lwandile Amelia Makhwelo.

“His wife Regina Sibanda was under pressure as the authorities were pressurising them claiming they were equally involved in political activities, as neighbours we last saw them a few weeks back we are not sure where they since disappeared to.

“The house was now being constantly raided as authorities were now targeting them for their alleged political activities,” said a neighbour who spoke on condition of anonymity.

This publication managed to get in touch with the son, Ngqabutho who confirmed Desire’s disappearance.

“Me and my family were attacked at our household by members of the Zanu-PF party who were accusing us of inciting violence it is on that day my father went missing,” said Ngqabutho.
