ZIMBABWE Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) is preparating for the Commissioner General Sports Week to be held in Ntabazinduna Training School from 29 August to 3 September.

The occasion will see officers representing four provinces and the ZPCS Headquarters belt out in 10 sporting disciplines.
The event was established in 2002 and is the country’s premier correctional institution’s annual sporting event where correctional officers showcase their talents in sports which include athletics, darts, netball, volleyball, pool table, chess, soccer, tug of war, golf as well as tennis.

The ZPCS which was formerly called Zimbabwe Prison Services (ZPS) has since centralised its operations from the four traditional regional headquarters to all the country’s 10 provinces by establishing its administrative provincial headquarters.

ZPSC had four regions namely Matabeleland, Midlands-Masvingo, Manicaland and Mashonaland and now they are named after all the four provinces of the country.

Elimination competitions are being held throughout the provinces with Matabeleland provinces being held last week at Ntabazinduna Training School in order to come up with Matabeleland provinces select teams.

In an interview, ZPCS’ Bulawayo Metropolitan Province Public Relations Officer Principal Prison Officer Garainashe Moyo said preparations are at an advanced stage.

“Officers from all the Matabeleland Provinces and Bulawayo Metro are converged at our training school in Ntabazinduna to conduct elimination competitions in a bid to come up with a team which will represent the whole of Matabeleland Provinces,” he said.

Moyo said his organisation does not exist in isolation as it is an integral part of the community hence members of the public are free to come out to support the event.

“We need support from the corporate world in whatever way to support our sports week, ZPCS is a people’s institution hence people should also come in their numbers to give some applause for their officers,” Moyo said

Moyo also said the games are meant to bring about all men and women and senior officers of the organisation to interact through sport.
