DESERVING senior civil servants who signed performance-based contracts at the beginning of last year will be paid their bonuses in February with Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Minister Professor Paul Mavima insisting it was morally wrong to reward laziness.

This comes after the Public Service Commission (PSC) announced a new format of payment of bonuses and other performance-related awards in the civil service. PSC said the annual 13th cheque will be paid based on performance.

In previous years the bonus was automatic to all civil servants regardless of performance. Secretary for the PSC Dr Tsitsi Choruma said last year those from director level and above would not get their bonuses in November as per tradition, but would get them this year after their performance has been reviewed. Other junior staffers in the PSC have received their bonuses already. Prof Mavima confirmed the development.

“They will be paid in February because that is when each and every one of them has been evaluated. The evaluation process has been done and for those who qualify the payment is in February. Those who were found to be performing well are going to be paid their bonuses,” he said.

Asked about the criteria used to award the deserving individuals, the Minister said the areas for evaluation were stated in their contracts. – @NyembeziMu.
