A POPULAR Bulawayo-based entertainer is reportedly on the run after he absconded bail on allegations of instigating political violence.
Kelvin kondowe, who stays in Tshabalala, made his name in the entertainment circles when he featured in the then famous urban television programme, Teen scene between 1995 and 1996, where he worked with the likes of Gibson Ncube, Otis Frazer and Mthulisi Patrick.
Now going under the stagename DJ Double K, Kondowe was now also a known MDC activist where he was openly campaigning for the opposition.
Police sources revealed that Kondowe had been picked up for questioning on allegations of inciting political violence through the calling for people to engage in demonstrations against the government.
“Police details arrested Kondowe at Jacobs Estate agency where he was attempting to sell his house amid suspicion that he wanted to skip the country. He however skipped bail after his initial court appearance where he was claiming harassment while in custody. For now the information we have is that he went to South Africa other sources claim that he escaped to Swaziland but all this is not confirmed,” said the police source.
However, this publication managed to speak to some of his colleagues who revealed that the popular DJ had confided to them that he had been harassed and raped while in custody.
“He made it clear that he fears going back to prison because of the treatment he got while in prison. Further, he was just targeted because of his popularity but never at any point did he partake in inciting political violence, he was just a popular figure supporting the opposition,” said the friend who preferred anonymity fearing victimisation.
Over the years the opposition was using Kondowe to rally youths to support the party and would constantly provide entertainment at party events.
