A FORMER ZBC canteen cook Norman “Big Big” Moyo, who was retrenched by the national broadcaster last year, has found a new lifeline after winning the Chibuku Road to fame Midlands finals that were held in Gokwe last weekend.

Moyo who worked at the now defunct ZBC Voice of Zimbabwe station in Gweru won the provincial finals at Gokwe centre with his hit song Dafi from the album title Dafi carrying the day for him.

For his efforts Moyo won $1 000 and is in line for the $5 000 national price money should he win the national finals.

An ecstatic Moyo who fronts the Murinye Express said he was now gunning for the national finals which will be staged in Harare in September.

“I am very happy to win the provincial finals and to be in the running for the national finals. It was a tough contest but we managed to win it.

“It was a result of the hard work that we put in, in preparation for the provincial finals,” said Moyo.

Moyo said his hit song Dafi which means frog in english mesmerised fans and swayed the judges to vote for him.

The song depicted people whose behaviour is that of a frog which is not stable but hope from one position to the other.

The songs borrow from the English adage that a rolling stone gathers no moss.

The album Dafi carries songs such as Camouflage and Makandiberekerei which also sent fans into a frenzy.  Murinye Express was formed last year in Gweru following the collapse of Mabhawuwa Express in which Moyo was a script writer and backing vocalist.

The death of lead vocalist Finish Kashangura last year also signalled the death of Mabhawuwa Express leading to the formation of Murinye Express with Moyo assuming its leadership.

Moyo said the formation of Murinye Express brings back the Sungura museve flavour which was popularised by Mabhawuwa Express back in the day when System Tazvida was the lead vocalist.

The former ZBC employee thanked Chibuku for offering a launch pad to upcoming musicians to kick start their careers.
