FOUR candidates, two for each position have been cleared to contest in the Highlanders elections to be held on 3 February after they were given the green light by the club’s nomination court yesterday.

After receiving recommendation forms from the candidates and vetting them, the Highlanders nomination court announced that for the vice-chairman’s post, Modern Ngwenya, the man who has held the position since 2016 faces a challenge from businessman Longwe Ndlovu.

Incumbent treasurer, Donald Ndebele has banker Charles Ndlovu standing in his way for a second term in charge of the Highlanders finances.

The four will be paraded before the Highlanders members during the club’s annual general meeting today before they are given time to share with the voters what they are promising if elected on the day of the elections. Secretary of the Highlanders nomination committee, Cosmas Sikhosana described the vetting process as a smooth procedure with the only glitch being the extension of the nomination period, which had to be pushed forward by a week due to disturbances in the country.

Modern Ngwenya

“For the vice-chairman’s post, we have the incumbent Modern Ngwenya and Longwe Ndlovu. For the treasurer, we have current treasurer also wanting to contest Donald Ndebele and Charles Ndlovu. It was a smooth process, unfortunately there was that break which led to the extension of the nomination period by one week,’’ Sikhosana said.

With Sikhosana stating that no candidates were disqualified, it means that Nkululelo Ndlovu, who had indicated to this publication that he intended to stand as treasurer after being approached by some concerned members, did not enter the race.

Donald Ndebele

The biggest challenge for Ndlovu, a banker by profession has been his tendency to announce his candidature a few days before elections while others would have declared their intention to contest months before. In 2016, Ndlovu also entered the race in the last minute and actually did well to get 86 votes when he had not campaigned much compared to Ndebele.
