GWANDA Town Council has purchased five pick-up trucks and one refuse collection truck, a development expected to enhance service delivery in the mining town.
The local authority availed the five vehicles to the residents during a full council meeting last week.
The town mayor Councillor Knowledge Ndlovu expressed gratitude over the initiative saying it was a good step taken by the local authority.
The meeting heard that the vehicles were bought by a land developer as payment for land bought from the council.

“Through one of our land developers, we have managed to purchase five vehicles and this is part of our capital projects. I am optimistic that the vehicles will bring about a positive change to our community especially on service delivery,” Clr Ndlovu said.
Clr Ndlovu said with the recent developments, the council would work tirelessly to meet the needs of the locals.

“We promise to work hard to improve the status of our town. I am also positive that if we continue working well together, as council and residents, greater things will be done in this town,” he said.

Residents were also encouraged to take good care of the purchased property as it was not only the responsibility of the local authority. He encouraged residents to honour their debts so that service delivery was improved.

Speaking at the same event, the town engineer Mr Phakamile Ndebele also expressed confidence that council would do more for the residents and buy more assets.

“This is just a drop in the ocean and it doesn’t mean we sold land for cars. As council we will do our best to take good care of these vehicles,” he said.

The refuse compactor was purchased some months ago and is already in operation. The town has since noted an improvement in refuse collection.

Service delivery has been affected by failure by residents to pay debts resulting in council being faced with numerous challenges among them failure to pay workers salaries on time.
