HIGHLANDERS rugby legends, some of whom are based outside the country are squaring off against their southern region counterparts in an annual exhibition match at Hartsfield Rugby Ground on Saturday.

Orga Mathaba, George Mukorera, Arthur Mathe, Themba Phiri, Victor Olonga, Silethokuhle Ndlovu, Lucky Sibanda and Andrew Munemo are some of the ex-Highlanders players who will take rugby fans down memory lane at Hartsfield. Even retired female players, Nothando Ndlovu and Octavia Chikukura will line up against men.

Australia based Mathaba, who is already in the country said he was looking forward to the fixture as it gives them an opportunity to map to chart the way ahead for their former club.

“It’s a more of a get together, this is where we talk about the club, how we can take our former club forward. We always look forward to this day every year, I actually came down from Australia for this,” Mathaba said.

The exhibition match is now its in fourth and always takes place on the Unity Day, with the fixture taking place a day before in 2019. Nyararai Sibanda, Brian Arendse and Thulani Tabulawa make up the Highlanders legends technical team.

Also lined up on the same day are two matches featuring the current Highlanders men’s team who take on their Great North rivals from Botswana. The Highlanders women also face off with their Great North counterparts in what promises to be a day full of excitement for fans of the game since there has been much rugby action in Bulawayo this year.
