History teachers meet Dr Manners Msongelwa

A total of 150 history teachers from across the country are meeting in Harare where they are discussing several issues pertaining to their profession and what they can do to improve their craft. On Friday, the History Teachers of Zimbabwe began a three-day conference at Allan Wilson High School in the capital that ends today and yesterday it was graced by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry and Primary and Secondary Education, Mrs Tumisang Thabela, who addressed the delegates.

The conference was also graced by the presence of distinguished lecturers, Ms Janet Malete, a History Curriculum officer with the Ministry of Education and Skills Development in Botswana, Langyiza Shimba from the University of Zambia, Dr Mushonga from Free State University and Dr Denise Bentrovato from the University of Pretoria.

Speaking on the sidelines of the conference, the president of History Teachers of Zimbabwe, Mr Manners Msongelwa was happy with the turn out and the positive interactions that have been part of the conference. 

He said delegates had been very engaged during the conference, adding that key strategies are being devised for advisement to the ministry. “We have had a very positive two days of the conference and I am happy with the numbers and the engagements during panel discussions. I think we will be able to come up with useful strategies that we will pass on to the ministry for consideration,” said Mr Msongelwa.

Mr Msongelwa said among the key discussions that have been held at the conference was how best to make Continuous Assessment Learning Activity (CALA) acceptable to the country’s students. CALA is a student assessment system that was implemented in the final term of 2021 in preparation for the 2021 Zimsec examinations. 

He also said delegates discussed how best to use different methodologies so that they can make teaching more exciting as well as how they can embrace Information Communication Technologies education in their teaching and use different platforms such as Facebook and YouTube, like Mr Msongelwa does during his lessons.
