WOMEN hockey in Bulawayo is lagging behind as compared to their counterparts from other parts of the country.

These were the words of Matabeleland Hockey Board media officer Jerry Sullivan during the recently held invitational tournament to assist school teams preparing to travel to South Africa.

“Ladies hockey in Bulawayo is dying, in fact it is not as strong as it is in Harare, and so as MHB we are trying to develop as many players as we can in order to keep up with the other provinces.

“The biggest handicap that has resulted in lack of activity within this part of the country has been the prices of hockey equipment in shops which are beyond the reach of many aspiring players and parents who take away their kids to travel elsewhere for holidays,” said.

To counter this the board is trying to hold as much training clinics as possible when an opportunity arises to make sure that the sport remains alive in the province.

Meanwhile as part of efforts to make sure that the region keeps up with other parts of the country MHB is set to hold a junior development program on Sundays starting from today in the morning up to after lunch.

This programme will bring together kids aged between six and 16 to come and learn the necessary skills for free under the watchful eyes of the experts of the game who are working hand in glove with the board.
