THE Ministry of information and Communications Technology, Postal and Courier Services has taken the Government’s e-learning drive to rural schools across the country after donating ten laptops to Mzinyathini High School in Esigodini, Matabeleland South.

The Ministry, working together with the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) has embarked on a countrywide programme aimed at improving ICT access, use and bridging the digital divide.

Speaking after the handover recently, the Minister of information and Communications Technology, Postal and Courier Services, Dr Jenfan Muswere said digital literacy was essential for people to take full advantage of new job opportunities and benefit from services that will become available on the digital platforms.

“As Government we have created an enabling environment for both public and private sector investment in telecommunications infrastructure and internet connectivity,” said Dr Muswere.

Umzingwane Member of Parliament, Brig General (Rtd) Levy Mayihlome advised the school to monitor the usage of the digital devices.

“We trust that the digital devices will be put to good use and the teachers will monitor the usage of these laptops by students to minimise vandalism of property,” he said.

However, he noted that their biggest challenge was the network infrastructure, which he said he was hopeful will be attended to soon.
