FOR the longest time, being a make-up artist has been more than just a career for South Africa-based make-up artist Jacqueline Moyo.

She has strived hard to become one of the best foreign make-up artists in a foreign land. Having been a product of Vault Cosmetic in Harare, she has taken the industry by storm making the best of what she learnt while at the cosmetic academy.

Today her work is being recognised in a foreign land and has earned her rave reviews.

Despite her outstanding academic background, being a make-up artist has always been her desire and this passion pushed her to work towards striving to become one of the best in the field. Such was her passion that she chose this career path over the corporate world.

“I have always found doing people’s make-up easier and more interesting than working in a corporate world. I studied Applied Physics at the National University of Science and Technology (Nust) and after graduating I worked in a corporate world for a while. I always struggled to get through an average working day. I always felt like I had to really make an effort to absorb information and process it. On the other hand on weekends when I did make-up on a few individuals, it was effortless,” Moyo said.

“Doing make-up was effortless. It challenged me but it was a challenge I looked forward to. Every time I work on a client it’s like I am in total harmony with what I am doing. There is nothing that beats doing something that you love.”

Her love for make-up grew and pushed her to acquire the requisite professional skills that took the passion from being just a hobby. She then enrolled for a professional course at Vault Cosmetic which is owned by the renowned international based make-up artist Jackie Mgido.

“When I decided to take my passion for make-up seriously I enrolled at Vault Cosmetic in Harare where I learnt so much about doing make-up in depth. Jackie Mgido is one of the people who inspired me and helped be what I am today. She’s one of the best make-up artists in the world and has worked with several American celebrities. I also learnt skills from my fellow colleagues at Vault, Deliwe and Tsungie who are now at Makeup Bar in Harare,” she said.

In the past two years, Moyo has been fortunate to meet many beautiful people both at home and in South Africa. She has done an amazing job in enhancing their beauty through her hands.

“My work has opened many doors for me in so many ways. When you see yourself doing make-up on prominent people, it shows you are headed in the right direction. I have had the honour of working with local celebrities like Hope Masike, Posh, Mai TT, Madam Boss and Sharon Manyonganise,” she said.

She revealed that she recently relocated to South Africa but the reviews that she has been getting are overwhelming.

“When I moved to South Africa I never thought my career would reach the levels that it has. Besides working with local celebrities back home I now have an opportunity to do make-up on South African celebrities like Unathi Msongelwa and news anchor Abigail Visargie who all have faith in my work as we have grown to have a working relationship,” Moyo said.

Her work does not end with the celebrities only as she has worked with top models as well as brides.

Moyo’s good work has really taken her career to another level as she announced that she will be a make-up artist in a new reality show which will start screening in January next year in South Africa.

“Everything seems to be going in the right direction for me. I will soon be embarking on my first big project which is supposed to start in early January on Sabc and I am really excited about this. It’s an honour and privilege for me and an opportunity to raise the Zimbabwean flag high,” she said.

Talking about her successful journey as a make-up artist, Moyo said the key of becoming successful in this kind of work is to stay humble, give thanks to God and lend a helping hand to those who need it.

“God has placed each of us on earth to shine! Tap into your passion and the rest will follow because everything you do from your heart will be blessed and it will be successful and I am a living testimony of that,” she said.
