MUNAM Exploration Mine workers have dragged their employer to the National Employment Council (NEC) for failure to provide written work contracts and salaries.
A workers’ representative, Mr Nhamo Maphosa, said they approached NEC after going for over a year without written work contracts, adding that they were also owed salaries “for a number of months”.
“We have waited for a year and the company has not provided us with written work contracts, and salaries have not been coming, that is why we have approached NEC.”
The managing director of the mine, Mr Amen Gumbi, said contracts for the workers were still being processed as the Covid-19-induced lockdown disrupted operations.
“Covid-19 is the reason why we have not been able to provide written contracts for the employees as everything was on a standstill. We have been trying to pay them their salaries while they were seated at home during lockdown but revenues have been low, but it is work in progress,” he said.
Munam Exploration Mine is located in Esigodini, Matabeleland South.
