EIGHT more schools in Masvingo Province have received a batch of 30 laptops each as the drive by the government to ensure a  digital economy and close the gap between the rural-urban schools by 2030 gathers momentum.

The schools that received the donation include Mutendi High School, Mukonde Secondary School, Chiredzi Christian College, Daitai Secondary School, Madzivanyika High School, Chamanhanzva High School, Mushawasha Secondary School and Jaka High School.

The donation comes with a free internet access for a year, a printer, a projector as well as training of all teachers in basic skills in Information and Communication Technology (ICT). The development follows the commissioning of 12 ICT laboratories at primary and secondary schools in the province by the Minister of Information Communication Technology Postal and Courier Services Dr Jenfan Muswere.

Speaking in an interview with the Sunday News the Deputy Director of Business Applications in the Ministry of ICT Mr Musafare Chikonye said that the Ministry of ICT was tasked to assist schools in establishing ICT labs and to train learners so that they were equipped with digital skills.

“This programme was introduced by His Excellency Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa to ensure that as we journey towards a digital economy, our societies are prepared for the digital economic transformation and more specifically that our school children are also trained in digital skills. It is through this ICT lab per school project that the Minister has been tasked to help schools establish laboratories which would be used by pupils in sharpening their digital skills.”

“Each school will also get one printer, one projector, one white board as well as free training of all teachers in basic ICT skills. The schools have received 30 laptops each and they will have free internet access for 12 months.

“For those 12 months the internet fees will be paid through the Ministry of ICT,” he said.
