BULAWAYO Volleyball League newcomers National University of Science and Technology (Nust) have set sights on winning the championship in their maiden year after taking the lead in the log standings at the halfway mark.

Nust coach, Khanyile Dlamini said topping the men’s section of the league at this point meant they have no option but to go for the top honours.

Having played six games, Nust are on 14 points, two ahead of second-placed Highlanders who have two games in hand.

“Now that we have played every team in the league and still on top of the log, I can safely say that we are fancying our chances of winning the title. The morale is very high going into the second half of the season, and hopefully we will win all our remaining games,” she said.

Despite having played two more games than Highlanders, Dlamini said what keeps them motivated is the fact that this is their maiden season in the league.

“What keeps us motivated towards winning the league is that this is our first year playing in the league hence the boys are well geared for the remaining games,” said Dlamini.

“When we joined the league, our sole purpose was to expose the varsity boys to competitive games, not knowing that they carry the capabilities of causing upsets to big teams. We are kindly asking our supporters to come in numbers and rally us as we surge towards victory”.

In the ladies’ section, Hurricanes top the standings with 15 points, having won all the five games they have played so far with their latest victory coming at the expense of Nust whom they beat 3-1. Bulawayo Polytechnic is second with eight points after winning three and losing three of their first six games.

The league’s chairperson, William Mazviro praised the league’s new comers who have taken everyone by a storm and also cited that the league has competitive teams which can compete and win in the National Volleyball League playoffs scheduled for mid June.
