A 40-YEAR- OLD gun-totting robber who has been on the loose unleashing terror in Binga and Gokwe shot himself dead after a foiled robbery attempt where he robbed a cattle buyer of $15 000 before brave villagers mobbed him at the instigation of one female farmer who refused to comply with the robber’s demands.
The incident occurred last Thursday when the notorious armed robber, Carshony Munyamani pounced at Tare Shopping Centre in Gokwe where cattle farmers were auctioning their cattle to Zvimba farmer Mr Luke Gilmour (30) of Castle Farm.
Acting Midlands Police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Ethel Mukwende confirmed the incident but could not give further details on the matter. She referred Sunday News to National Police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba who was, however, not reachable.
Mr Shepherd Chihome a farmer who had sold his cattle to Mr Gilmour said the 40 farmers were queuing for their money at Mr Gilmour’s vehicle when Munyamani emerged from the bush armed with a pistol and fired two warning shots in the air before instructing everyone to lie down. He then snatched a satchel that had money from the farmer.
Mr Chihome said Munyamani then ran away while firing shots in the air to scare away the villagers while at the same time intermittently firing at Mr Gilmour hitting his car six times on the driver’s door.
He said it took one brave woman identified as Mrs Kufakunesu who refused to lie down and encouraged other villagers who were lying on the ground to chase after the robber to which they complied. Mr Chihome said villagers surrounded him and he dropped the bag before shooting himself on the left side of the head.
