POLICE in Zvishavane have arrested a 16-year-old girl from Shamva Complex after she allegedly dumped her new born baby in a Blair toilet after concealing her pregnancy from her parents.
The girl (name withheld) was on Friday hauled before Mberengwa magistrate Mrs Evia Matura facing infanticide charges. She was convicted on her own plea and was remanded to this Friday for sentencing.
Prosecuting, Mr Michael Ncube told the court that on 5 May around 5am, the girl, who was sleeping with her mother, woke up and started complaining of menstrual period pain and started vomiting.
The court heard that the girl then went to the toilet where she allegedly gave birth to a baby boy which she dumped into the toilet and went back to the house.
The court heard that on her way back home, she met a neighbour Ms Memory Tigere who also wanted to use the same toilet. Mr Ncube said when Ms Tigere got into the toilet she heard the baby crying from the toilet pit and alerted other neighbours and the complex owner.
The neighbours alerted the police who attended the scene and they retrieved the baby from the toilet pit.
The baby was retrieved and taken to Mberengwa District Hospital but died while being attended to.
The girl was subsequently arrested and taken to the same hospital for medical examination where a medical report confirmed that she had given birth.
