VICE-PRESIDENT Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa yesterday conveyed his condolences to the family of the late Kwekwe businessman and Steelmakers chief executive officer Mr Alexander Johnson who together with wife Achama and an employee Sherman Majuru died in a car accident last Wednesday. Addressing mourners during a funeral service in Kwekwe yesterday, Cde Mnangagwa described Mr Johnson as a committed businessman saying the manner he conducted himself around showed that he was humble.
“Mr Johnson was a committed businessman and this could be seen by the way he carried himself. He was very humble. We are deeply saddened by his passing on. What should console us is that the way of selecting those that have to depart is known by God and he does that at his own time.
“I want to give you an example in our party Zanu-PF. Some people buy membership cards for personal reasons so that they abuse it, some buy it so that they can protect themselves in case what they were hoping for does not go as planned and some buy it so that they can be fully committed members who will dedicate their lives to working for the country. The same applies in business and I say Mr Johnson was one of the few dedicated business people in the country,” he said.
Mr Johnson and wife Achama’s bodies were yesterday ferried to their home country, India where they will be cremated.
Confederation of Zimbabwean Industries president Mr Busisa Moyo was among those that paid their last respects to the renowned businessman. He said they were deeply saddened by the untimely death of one of their members who had contributed immensely in the iron and steel manufacturing industry.
The three died in an accident on Wednesday evening when a Mercedes Benz E320 they were travelling in collided head on with another Mercedes Benz E 320 along the Harare-Bulawayo Highway. The accident occurred at around 5.10PM at the 196km peg along Harare-Bulawayo Highway near Sable Chemical Industries in Kwekwe.
Mr Johnson who was going to Harare was travelling with his wife and was being driven by an employee Majuru while the other vehicle which was Kwekwe bound was being driven by Privilege Fundira carrying two passengers. Preliminary investigations indicate that Fundira tried to overtake a vehicle ahead of an oncoming traffic resulting in the head on collision.
