FORMER Railstars defender Zimiseleni Moyo says he regrets turning down an opportunity to sign for Highlanders at the beginning of the year.

Moyo opted against renewing his contract with Zambian side Zesco United following its expiry last year as he sought new challenges but his intended move to other leagues within the region hit a brick wall and he has spent the season without a club.

Moyo said the biggest mistake he made was not signing for Highlanders as the move could have enabled him to keep on playing.

The former Motor Action player was on the verge of signing for Highlanders before the season kicked off after then coach Bongani Mafu had been impressed by his talents but he opted against putting pen to paper as he was eyeing a move to either Mozambique or Angola. The left-back said while he had secured a move to a team in Mozambique, he fell out with his agent over the latter’s fees.

“I could have gone to Mozambique but when I was about to sign, we had problems with my agent as more people started emerging saying they also have to be paid for facilitating the deal which made me decide against continuing with the move.

“Mistakes happen in life and I think not signing for Highlanders at the beginning of the year is one I made. It could have given me an opportunity to keep on playing throughout the year but that is done, I am now looking forward to finding a team to play for next year,” he said, adding leaving Zambia was, however, not a mistake as he felt it was time to change the environment.

Moyo has been training with How Mine for the past month but said he has not signed for the team.

Moyo’s star rose when he moved to Zambia in 2010 after being spotted playing in money games at a park in Hillbrow, South Africa. He made sterling performances at Zesco where he won the league and Barclays Cup in his first year at the Zambian club and again last year.
