MISS Mthwakazi Traditional Fashion Show awards that started in 2016 will this year be held on 26 May at Polytechnic Beit Hall in Bulawayo.

Models from different cultures at the age of 14 to 25 are urged to register at a fee of $10. The traditional fashion show, that aims at reviving and elevating African traditional culture, is the brainchild of Felicity Dube an artist and craft antique.

Dube said she has been examining modern fashion shows and observed that most of them anticipate a western culture but she saw a need to showcase African beauty and its culture in Zimbabwe.

“I love cultural activities, and I noticed that most fashion shows are western which is good because we are living in modern times, but we must not forget our culture. So I decided to call young people to show how beautiful we are in our own traditional culture fashion,” she said.

She further invited models of different cultures from around the country to participate in the awards because the show is meant to elevate and promote Zimbabwean traditional fashion.

“Everyone is invited, any culture from all over Zimbabwe. Anyone can come and lift the trophy. My vision is that one day we come up with our culture fashion show day in Zimbabwe. Now I am working on an accommodative name for the awards because this one sounds Ndebele centred of which my aim is that these awards will elevate our own diverse cultures as Zimbabweans, so the name will be out soon,” she said.

Traditional foods will be sold on the day of the awards.
