A Bulawayo bookshop has launched a campaign to source satchels for learners in rural schools in Matabeleland North Province.

The campaign seeks to alleviate the challenges that many pupils in rural schools face when they carry their exercise and textbooks.

Schools are set to re-open in the coming month and with the incessant rains still pounding most parts of the country, many rural pupils are set to face the challenge of securing their books.

In an interview, Dingani Bookshop and Stationery director Mr Witness Dingani said they were calling on well wishers to come forward and help disadvantaged pupils in the rural areas.

“This campaign is meant to assist the rural underprivileged learners with school bags. A school bag is a necessity when carrying stationery. In rural areas a number of learners have lost their valued books because of carrying books using plastic bags,” said Mr Dingani.

He said the donations will be handed over to selected schools dotted around the province.

“Our reason is why we started this campaign and we will work flat out to achieve this cause. Going forward we will be rolling out the programme as per districts so that we ensure the programme does not die a still birth,” said Mr Dingani.

He said those willing to donate satchels can drop them at their offices at Shop Number 103 along Robert Mugabe Way between 10th and 11th avenues. – @mthabisi_mthire
