BULAWAYO will hold its final team selection for next month’s National Cross Country Championships at Luveve High School this morning.
Manuel Mpofu, the Bulawayo Athletics Board chairman said there is a good cross country route around Luveve High School which has been utilised before. The event is being used to choose the provincial team for the national competition at Hillside Dams on 12 February.
“We are doing our final selection on Sunday (today) for the Bulawayo team for the national cross country to be held on 12 February at Hillside Dams. Our team will be made up of 36 athletes. The technical team is made up of team manager Musawenkosi Thabane, the coaches are Thulisile Dube and Sicino Mpofu,’’ said Mpofu.
According to the Bab chairman, the Bulawayo team is scheduled to hold its first training session at White City Stadium on Saturday before the athletes head to Hillside Dams to familiarise with the route as well as the terrain on 4 February.
“On 28 January our team will have their first training session at White City Stadium, on 4 February they will head to Hillside Dams for training so that they can feel the terrain and race course. As the hosts our athletes don’t have to learn the route on the day, we have to take advantage. Our first trials took place on 14 January, on Sunday they will be comparing times so that we choose the best team for Bulawayo,’’ Mpofu said.
At last Sunday’s track and field event at White City Stadium, two athletes qualified for the semi-finals of the Coca-Cola Four Mine Mile Challenge. Trust Chidomaya and Dumo Mkhwananzi have sealed a place for the semi-finals that will be held a day before the actual race on 29 April.
Meanwhile, Mpofu said Bab will conduct a kids athletics coaching course at White City Stadium from Friday to Sunday which is open to everyone involved in the sport or any sporting discipline.
