NOWADAYS decorating or designing a home is fun and easy considering the availability of resources such as reading from the internet, magazines, books and television. People get ideas as well as inspiration on how to make their homes look elegant and beautiful without spending a fortune.

This week’s column will explore some of the ways of turning your vintage -looking kitchen to a modern one.

There are various ways to remodel your old kitchen like painting walls with a different colour from the one you had before. Colours such as grey or beige make a room feel calm and comfortable. If you want your kitchen to have some light you can use things such as mirrors which can reflect sunlight. Rearranging your kitchen’s furniture and adding new coloured covers on it will make a big difference. Combining old and new ideas will be cheap and effective to decorate your kitchen. At times bright colours can work when they are correctly done.

Adding small accessories may help in re-inventing your kitchen. Some of the things to add include putting a small carpet, hanging tiny potted plant, adding new utensils, furniture accessories, and creating new spaces with wallpaper borders. By so doing it will be cheaper and easier.

Flowers are another effective way of sprucing up your kitchen. The kitchen is the ideal place to grow herbs. Grow herbs on a kitchen windowsill or in a hanging basket or vase. Herbs will not only decorate your kitchen but will provide fresh leaves which will be convenient to prepare delicious dishes. Herbs such as rosemary, lavender, basil, parsley, lemon balm, lemon grass, mint, oregano, cilantro, and thyme are easy to grow.

Changing the flooring for your kitchen can also enhance the look of your kitchen. If you are working with a tight budget vinyl is the best option for you — not that I am saying it is not quality. It comes in many colours and it is easy to install, which means you can install it yourself.
