PUPILS and teachers at Esikhoveni Primary School in Esigodini have been left stranded after a classroom and a teachers’ cottage were destroyed by rains and winds last week.

The strong winds blew off the roofing of the classroom block which housed two classes and one teachers’ cottage.

In a telephone interview, the School Development Committee chairperson, Mr Bekithemba Ncube, said pupils were now being forced to share classrooms.

“I can confirm that a classroom block roof at Esikhoveni Primary School which housed ECD pupils and Grade 4 pupils was destroyed last month and the same happened on Wednesday with a roof being destroyed at a teacher’s house. The pupils have been left with no choice but to be squeezed up in order to accommodate them all as the rainy season is already underway,” said Mr Ncube.

He said there were no casualties but the school was appealing for assistance to repair the damages.

“The head has reported the case to the District School Inspector and we are still waiting for a reply and a way forward as we have to repair the damages before more rains start and we fear this might cause further damage,” he said.

“We are appealing to various stakeholders and the community for assistance to repair the structures so that our pupils and teachers operate in a safe and friendly environment,” said Mr Ncube.
