POLICE in Masvingo have launched a blitz on pirate taxis (mushika-shika) for violating road regulations, endangering other road users and congesting the Central Business District (CBD) with more than 10 vehicles being impounded daily.
Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa confirmed the operation. Insp Dhewa said the thrust of the intensified operation was to create order in the CBD.
“This intensified routine came as a result of lawlessness by taxi drivers who are endangering other motorists and pedestrians. The thrust of the exercise is to restore sanity in the CBD which has been overrun by these taxis.
“At least 10 taxis are being impounded daily and the exercise will only stop once sanity has been restored. Some of them drive in wrong lanes, block traffic and park in reserved or prohibited places,” said Insp Dhewa.
Insp Dhewa also urged the commuting public to use kombis which adhere to safety precautions and are operating within the confines of the law.
