MATOBO North Member of Parliament Cde Edgar Moyo has urged people not to rely on lies peddled by social media activists especially on the state of the economy.

Cde Moyo, who is also the Deputy Minister of Primary and Secondary Education said people should seek official information from relevant authorities instead of taking action based on social media reports. He was speaking at the interactive meeting held on Friday in Mbembeswana in his constituency.

“There are messages circulating on social media that are encouraging people to use all their bond notes because they will be valueless by Monday (tomorrow), those are lies, please do not be deceived by such messages. These things cause panic and that is when you see someone going to buy things that they do not need. People should learn to engage authorities in matters such as these to avoid confusion.

“Do not engage yourselves into illegal money exchanges. The Government has encouraged people to open new foreign currency accounts so that they are able to keep their foreign currency safe in banks and avoid the illegal market,” he said.
People engaged in panic buying last week resulting in some retailers increasing prices. Cde Moyo encouraged people to work towards building the country and stop blaming each other.

“As a country let us work on building our country. Zimbabwe is at a moment where difficult decisions need to be made for the betterment of the country because the Government owes money to a number of lenders including the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe. The Minister of Finance and Economic Development (Professor Mthuli Ncube) is in Bali discussing these issues with the World Bank and other big banks to try and solve the situation that is affecting our country.”
