Sunday News staffer scoops award

MUDZAMIRI WINS AN AWARDSUNDAY News senior photographer Dennis Mudzamiri scooped the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) photo-journalist of the year 2014 award at the council’s media awards ceremony held in Harare on Friday night.

He wins the accolade for the second time in as many years after scooping the award during the inaugural edition of the media awards ceremony.

For his feat, Mudzamiri received a certificate and a monetary reward from the event’s organisers.

This comes just a few months after another Sunday News staffer, Dumisani Nsingo hoisted the publication’s flag high after scooping the National Journalism and Media Awards (Njama) Environment Reporter of the Year 2013-2014 award.

Mudzamiri’s craftsmanship behind the camera shrugged off stiff competition from a host of other entries from other media houses across the country.

The veteran photographer, who has won several awards before, expressed gratitude to the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe for recognising efforts by the media in promoting safety on the country’s roads.

“I would want to first of all applaud the Traffic Safety Council for coming up with these awards. It shows that the council recognises our work as journalists and this helps to motivate us.

“As journalists we play a crucial role in bringing up issues for public debate and if our efforts are recognised in this manner we really feel appreciated. I’m humbled by the recognition I have received,” he said.

Mhizha, as Mudzamiri is affectionately called by his colleagues, dedicated the award to Sunday News editor, Tumeliso Makhurane, and the entire Sunday News family.

“I wouldn’t have won this award if it were not for the support I get from my editor and all my colleagues at the Sunday News. I dedicate this award to them and I thank everyone for supporting me,” said Mudzamiri.

Meanwhile, Chronicle senior reporter Factmore Dzobo bagged a double at the awards ceremony after he scooped the Print Media Reporter of the Year and the Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development’s Awards.

Chronicle correspondent Nqobile Tshili emerged second runner-up in the Print Media Reporter of the Year category. Econet Wireless financial director Mr Kriston Chirairo, who was the guest of honour at the awards ceremony, presented the accolades to the winners.
