ONE of the most organised football leagues in the country, the Bulawayo Social Soccer League (BSSL) recently came to a thrilling end with its Champion of Champions played at Njube’s famed Desert Ground.

With a grand total of 60 affiliates split into two pools, the season which had served fans with many unforgettable moments had just one final chapter to write in the memories of social soccer followers.

Mayihlome, runners-up in Pool B managed to grab a third-place finish beating Pool A’s runners-up Emakhandeni United 2-1 in what was just a warm-up to the main event.

The league’s main event billed as the biggest game had its off the pitch controversies. Prior to the game, pointers suggested yet another Stars FC’s finest moment but Skippers just days before the final swung the pendulum their way taking advantage of a constitutional ambiguity to sign four players from teams within the league, the major highlight being former Highlanders captain and now assistant coach, Bekithemba “Super” Ndlovu.

The build-up to the game was dominated by many questions which would only be answered on the field of play once the referee blew his whistle to signal the start of the final.

The tension surrounding the game was transmitted onto the pitch with the referee forced to issue a few cards to regain control of a game that was beginning to spill out of control.

Skippers eventually scored in the first half of extra time to claim the bragging rights of being called Bulawayo’s Social Soccer League Champions.
