NOT knowing when they can get onto the field again is something that is wearisome for Zimbabwe Test cricket captain Sean Williams.

The coronavirus has seen a disruption of sporting activity the world over, with Zimbabwe’s home series against Ireland, which was meant to take place early last month already postponed. For Williams, not knowing when the action will eventually resume is not easy to handle.

The Chevrons Test skipper is keeping his fingers crossed that they will play some cricket this year.

“It’s extremely frustrating but we have to play our part and abide by the rules the Government has laid down as well as lead by example to the people, hopefully we get to play cricket at some point this year, even if it’s franchise league, unfortunately the whole world is in this situation and it’s out of our control until things are under control,’’ Williams said.

The national team players have been keeping fit by training at home with sprints of 20 metres for those with the space.

“We have been doing body weight training and sprints of up to 20 metres for those who have the space. We have two groups of players following workouts from our national team fitness trainer on a daily basis so the entire team is still training in the space of their own homes,’’ he said.

For someone who hardly spends time at home because of the nature of his job, the crisis has come as some sort of blessing for Williams who has had to spend more time with his wife Shantel and two months old Charlotte. When his child was born in March, the left-handed all rounder only spent a week with her before he left for national duty in Bangladesh.

“All is good at home with my wife and new born, I am busy with her most of the time. I don’t have a bowling machine so I’m limited to my space at home, which at the same time has been so good as I have been able to spend every minute with my wife and child,’’ Williams said.
What has made life easy for Williams is that his wife is a hockey player and that has made training at home enjoyable since the couple is exercising together. – @Mdawini_29
