MASVINGO City Council has turned down Great Zimbabwe University’s application for water supply at its School of Medicine campus.
According to latest full council minutes, the university is establishing a Medical School at the former Riverside Lodge, about three kilometres out of the city along the Masvingo-Mashava Road. The local authority said the fact that the new infrastructure was lying beyond the municipal commonage, it was difficult to connect it to the city’s water supply system.
In an interview, Mayor Councillor Collen Maboke, said council was not able to pump water to the medical school. He said there were other areas affected as well. He said there was room for a review when the power situation improved. GZU director of information and marketing Mr Anderson Chipatiso said the university had been using borehole water for the construction works.
“We drilled some boreholes at the site and that has been our source of water ever since we started constructing the infrastructure,” said Mr Chipatiso. — Walter Mswazie
