Dress code — Night out

eye on fashion nyt out

AS the weekend approaches everybody is talking about their weekend plans, most of these plans revolve around night functions. Fashion shows, concerts, the opening of a new club in town and so on. Dressing for a night out is not easy as it seems, there are a lot of decisions to make such as what kind of function you will be attending.

Fashion shows are easiest to dress up for, because there is always a dress code. You can either go all out and dramatic in ethnic dresses or dress down in jeans, heels and a blazer. A LBD (little black dress) is always a good choice though. Fashion shows usually have chilled vibes so there is not much dancing or chaos happening that could damage your best dress. However, those type of dinner dresses that look like the 80s bridemaids’ dresses should not make it to the show.

Going out to the nightclub is somehow important, everybody wants to look their best because you will meet people you know. Going to the club can be fun but it’s mostly about seeing people and being seen. There, you will meet high school buddies, your competition, exes, frenemies and you definitely want to leave a good impression and make some jealous.

People have the misconception that short clothes are for nightclubs. Not true. I’m not suggesting you wear a maxi-dress or poloneck but the short outfit should look well presented. The lines between trashy and classy are blurred for most. If you are wearing shorts make sure they suit your body type and they are worn with the right shoes. Some will risk catching a cold on a chilly winter night because they think shorts will make them look cool. A night out does not equal to a short and skimpy outfit. You can look classy in skinny jeans and crop top with the right accessories.

I would like to believe everyone is over dress tops being worn without bottoms at night functions. A dress will always look like a dress top, thank goodness for dress shirts. Dress shirts can be worn day or night, with a pair of heels or gladiators. They are comfortable too. Short dresses are appropriate for those who can handle themselves like ladies in public to avoid accidents. Sweat pants (tracksuit bottoms) are a no-no for a night out. They are okay at home or going to the shops. They may be comfortable but look tacky. Rather go for leggings; they look great with a nice see-through top.

Dressing trashy is never a good idea, some want attention at all costs but give people the wrong impression. You may not care what people think of you now but reputation is everything.

An LBD is always a win but to avoid blending into the crowd add gold accessories to brighten your look. Jumpsuits are also great for a night out, they look more eye catching, body hugging. Jeans will never go out of fashion and luckily they come in different colours; black, powder pink, white and even grey. It all depends on how you wear them. The high waist pants and trainer look is fab and comfortable, some may opt for heels to look chic. Heels are good if you can walk around in them all night, changing to flats is a turn off. Make sure you can dance in them.

When going out at night choose an outfit and a style that complements your complexion and figure. Very deep cuts may look trashy while high collars make you look conservative. So make sure there is a balance in order to achieve the classy look. Dress up in bold colours to make a fashion statement. Do wear a sexy crop top, sequin top or even a see-through top with jeans if you are not into shorts.

When it comes to make-up, nights and low lights give you the licence to wear a bit more make up than in the day time. Instead of heaping colour on your entire face, stick to one feature and try accentuate it. With bold smoky eyes keep your lips nude or with bold lips apply only mascara.

Before you go on that night out to get your life!!!
— Slather some moisturiser and shimmery lotion to your collarbones, shoulder and shins.
— Remember to shave your legs and armpits.
— Wear nice perfume with staying power (it should tantalise not overpower).
