THE National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe in partnership with Matrix Technology will soon put up an Online Wi-Fi Based Information Zone at the Joshua Mqabuko Nyongolo Nkomo’s statue in Bulawayo aimed at making it easy to access the late VP Nkomo’s history and that of the city.

National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe Western Region marketing officer Mr Phineas Chauke said the project will help the people to know more about the life of the late VP.

“We are putting up that facility at the Joshua Nkomo Statue and it will give information specifically on Dr Nkomo’s life, his legacy, his contributions to the country, the liberation and development of this country.

“We will also introduce the same facility at other monuments in and around Bulawayo, for example the Khami National Monuments and Matopos National Park. It will also include information about the City of Bulawayo,” said Mr Chauke.

He said the Wi-Fi zone can be accessed by anyone as long as they have smartphones.

“Everyone can access the information as long as they are using smartphones whenever they are within an 80-metre radius from the statue,” he said.

Mr Chauke said the facility will also include a downloadable section where one is able to download documents and videos.

“Currently we are finalising on the content because we are also trying to produce documentaries. We want people to know about their heritage and to be proud of being Zimbabweans,” he said.

Mr Chauke  said their mandate was to preserve national heritage, both natural and cultural and also interpret the heritage to the public and allow people to access information about their heritage.

“We want to try and make sure that this facility is put up and it’s functional before the end of this month because we want it to be part of the commemoration of Joshua Nkomo’s anniversary since he died on the 1st of July,” said Mr Chauke.

Dr Nkomo was born in 1918 and died on 1 July, 1999 at the age of 82.
