A high ranking police officer stationed at Ntabazinduna in Umguza District is lucky to be alive after he was allegedly stabbed and stoned by a gang from Fort Rixon accusing him of supplying information to the police regarding their whereabouts.

A court heard that Blessed Sibanda (24), Given Dube (25), Ronald Mbedzi (22) and a fourth member of the gang who is still at large, teamed up and assaulted Assistant Inspector Jonah Mtisi (34) at Mount Royal Business Centre, Fort Rixon in October during which they allegedly stabbed him twice on the forehead and once on the upper left eye.

The quartet allegedly stoned and assaulted Asst Insp Mtisi with bricks leaving him for dead. Sibanda, Dube and Mbedzi were not asked to plead to attempted murder when they appeared before Bulawayo regional magistrate Mr Chrispen Mberewere.

Mr Mberewere remanded them in custody to 16 January.

For the State, Mr Simbarashe Manyiwa said the four teamed up and confronted Asst Insp Mtisi while he was at the business centre on 27 October.

“They accused him of supplying information to the police at Fort Rixon about their whereabouts as they were on the police wanted list for a crime they had committed on 16 October,” Mr Manyiwa told the court.

“Sibanda and Mbedzi got hold of Asst Insp Mtisi and assaulted him several times all over the body with bricks. Dube stabbed him thrice with a knife, twice on the forehead and on top of the left eye.”

It was the State’s case that the four allegedly hit Asst Insp Mtisi with stones, bricks and fists until he lost consciousness.

The court heard that Asst Insp Mtisi was taken to the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) where he was admitted. The medical report was produced in court as evidence.
