HIGHLANDERS members had no business making a resolution that the club must appoint a chief executive officer by end of March, a former Bosso official has said.

The former Bosso board member, who cannot be named to protect his identity said members were supposed to only encourage the club to look for a CEO as what they did was taking away the powers of the executive.

“What the members did, it is illegal, unconstitutional, members have no mandate to make such resolutions, members should have only encouraged the club to appoint a CEO not to pass a resolution on that. The executive is guided by the financial situation of the club,’’ said the former board member.

Highlanders secretary-general Emmett Ndlovu said they have agreed as an executive to forward the matter to the club’s human resources committee.

“We have agreed as an executive to hand over the matter to our human resources committee, they will deliberate and come up with a position,’’ he said.

Since Ndumiso Gumede’s contract expired at the end of 2016, Ndlovu has assumed the roles of CEO, albeit without financial remuneration. Ndlovu said there was a criterion for a CEO and even if he meets that, he is not applying for the job.

“I am not getting a cent from Highlanders. I have no interest of being CEO. I went for an elected position at Highlanders which shows I don’t want to be an employee at the club. I am the SG and will see my term through. If the club had the capacity to hire a CEO even next week, I will be so happy,’’ said the former Bosso medic and team manager.

Last Sunday, during the club’s AGM, members passed a resolution for the leadership to appoint a CEO by 31 March. The motion was pushed for by former secretary-general Andrew Tapela who even came up with the date for the most senior member of the secretariat to be in office. Others who contributed in support of that motion said the club must appoint a CEO who is going to raise his own salary.

Highlanders acting chairman Modern Ngwenya has maintained that they are not in a hurry to engage a CEO as they are seized with trying to secure sponsorship for the club. Bosso had their funding cut by their main sponsors, BancABC who are pouring in $200 000 for this season, down from $455 693 in 2016.
