MUCH like any item in your home, scatter pillows can change the look and feel of your room.

Using scatter cushions as part of your home décor is one of the quickest and easiest ways of sprucing up the various indoor and outdoor spaces in your home.

You can use them to add colour or textural interest to a space, or to create a specific theme at a minimal cost.

Try to be creative. If your scatter cushions match your couch, it is time to be innovative and get rid of them. Scatter pillows are ideal for unifying all the colours and patterns in a room together and if they blend in with your sofa, you will end up with a décor arrangement that is entirely void of character and visual interest.

Try to have fun with your choice of scatters, use them to add colour, texture and pattern and to create a scheme that portrays your personality.

How you place your scatter pillows is crucial. They can completely transform a space, depending on where they are placed and how they are positioned. You can choose to group scatters of various sizes together or for a more uniform look. It all depends on you.

It is also a good idea to arrange them in a way where there is some kind of balance in the arrangement for optimum visual impact.

Experiment with different patterns. By so doing you can add to the aesthetic appeal of a space. If you are not daring and prefer monotone décor schemes, you can use scatters featuring various textures to create added visual interest. Imagine a living room with a monotone cream-coloured palette.

This scheme can be boosted up by adding a collection of cream-coloured scatters in various textures – think velvet, linen, cotton and faux fur.

The colour palette remains calming and neutral, but the added texture keeps it from being boring and dull.

The right selection of scatter pillows can change the style and tone of a room.

Most homeowners nowadays want to be unique by mixing different colours, which is not a problem especially if you know what you are doing. Brightly coloured scatters can add a bright pop of colour to an otherwise dull room.

However, some tend to “go-all-out” a little bit too much. The way you select colours can either destroy or make your home hence avoid mixing bright colours only because adding bright colours only, can make the space seem a little overwhelming.

Imagine a leather sofa with scatters that are green, orange, blue and yellow. That is a disaster.
