“DO not let winter ruin the sophisticated look of your home. Go all out and make your home look beautiful and at the same time warm,” said Mrs Melody Mlotshwa, an interior décor expert.

“I would like to advise homeowners to go all out and experiment and not be afraid. I know most of the times during this season people are more concerned with keeping themselves warm and worry less with other things,” she explained.

She said there are simple ways of ensuring that your home is warm and elegant at the same time.

“Ladies let us ensure that our surrounding is clean and warm at the same time. The bed should be warm but that does not mean it should be stuffed . . . You can have different layers on your bed but make sure that they are selectively and strategically placed,” she said.

Mrs Mlotshwa added that: “Different layers in your bed will create extra cosiness to your bedroom. Layer in additional pillow pairs and place a decorative throw in a seasonal colour or pattern across the foot of the bed.”

She said homeowners can include whatever they like on their beds and emphasised on the colours that they select.

“Pillows can add a pop of colour and texture in your home. People should know that the colour that they select can either make or destroy their space hence it is important to be cautious of that,” she said. “Make sure that the colours you select give life to you space. Pile up pillows of different sizes, look for pillows with a lot of texture, and then pile them on the couch.”

Mrs Mlotshwa said: “Try an area rug, nothing heralds the pending arrival of winter quite like a cold floor on stocking feet.

Fend off freezing toes by placing area rugs in well-travelled spots in the home. Or layer area rugs for even more cosiness.”

The interior décor expert said there are certain patterns that are perfect for this season.

“Seasonal patterns employ cosy patterns, such as plaid, herringbone and tweed, in small doses. Look for patterns that work with your home’s existing scheme. For example, if you have navy blue accents in your living room, incorporate a plaid throw with navy in the design for added warmth,” she mused.

Mrs Mlotshwa said: “Gold accents still have a warming effect and bring an elegant touch to your home. Hang a series of gold-framed mirrors on any bare wall space that needs a little lift. If you can’t find the perfect gold accessories, head to the crafts store, pick up some gold spray paint.”

“Do not be afraid to accessorise your home with brightly coloured towels and other affordable accessories in your home for muted tones and seasonal textures,” she added.
