A 33 year old man in Hwange was last week slapped with a 16-year sentence for rape.
The accused will however, serve an effective 14 years after two years were conditionally suspended for five years.
The accused who resides in Chachachunda village, chief Hwange in Hwange appeared before regional Hwange magistrate Mr Collet Ncube for raping his 11-year-old daughter.
The state represented by prosecutor Mrs Charline Gorerino said that on 23 November at around 6am the complainant who is in grade 6 was getting ready for school when her father ordered her not to go to school. He asked her to accompany him to Madumabisa shopping centre to buy mealie meal and she compiled.
The complainant resides with her step mother who was away in Victoria Falls and her step sister who was also unavailable at home. An hour later the complainant’s siblings left for school while she remained cleaning her room. The accused then barged in and told his daughter he was sexually hungry and wanted to have sexual intercourse with her but she refused.
The accused locked the door, spread a blanket on the floor and pushed his daughter to the ground. She fell and that is when he raped her once. The complainant tried to scream but no one came to her rescue.
The accused then showed his daughter an axe and threatened to kill her if she informed anyone.
On the same day at around 4pm, the complainant revealed the matter to her step sister when she returned from school, who immediately reported the matter to the police leading to their father’s arrest. – @5_Shannico
